Research and Data Analyst

Part-Time Internship, London

Briter is a fast-growing data-driven research company based in London and with a team presence spread across Africa and Europe. Briter is building the most comprehensive and integrated one-stop shop for insights across emerging markets and, by collecting and visualising data on technology ecosystems, it has grown to become the organisation releasing the largest collection of visual maps on Africa’s tech ecosystems in less than a year since its founding. Our work has recently been featured on major names such as Forbes, Tech Crunch, and Quartz.

We are now expanding our research to include more data points and more regions and are looking for an enthusiastic researcher and detail-oriented data analyst to support our Head of Research.

Internship Duration and working hours

  • 3 months - flexible - possibility to extend based on performance and motivation;

  • Part Time - no less than 12 (e.g. two mornings, one full day and a ‘work From Home’ morning - you do you! ).

The role

The job will include the following tasks:

  • Working closely with, and report to the Head of Research;

  • Data entry - cleaning and maintaining large datasets;

  • Supporting the design and creation of new maps and data visualisations (click here to access all our HD maps);

  • Researching online and offline (LinkedIn, emails, meetings, calls) to gather information about the ecosystems of interest (Africa, Asia, MENA, etc.);

  • Liaising with the team and reporting relevant news related to Briter’s areas of interest;

  • Interacting with Briter’s broader network and partners;

  • Producing targeted newsletters and create appropriate content on social media.

We are looking for someone with

  • A genuine interest in socio-economic issues, in particular, technology and innovative businesses;

  • An entrepreneurial spirit and interest in startups, investment, and private sector development;

  • A degree related to, or demonstrable and adequate knowledge of technology and private sector development across emerging markets, socio-economic growth, economics, impact finance;

  • Interest in performing data collection, crunching, and visualisation;

    • with extreme attention to detail (speling, tpyos, Capital lEtTers, double inputs inputs) - dirty databases are useless databases;

  • Professionalism when communicating with team, clients, and partners;

  • Understanding of professional use of social media such as Twitter, Medium, and Instagram.

Skills

  • Perfect fluency in English - to carry out research and interact with high level clients and partners of the caliber of the World Bank, government officials, international banks and corporations;

  • Operational knowledge of Google Suite, MS Office, Pivot Tables, Data Entry and Database Maintenance in Excel/Google Sheets;

  • Stellar communication skills - e.g. email clarity, PPT design and visualisation - with both the team and clients/partners.

Plus

  • Experience working in Africa, South Asia, or Latin America, both remotely and physically:

  • Knowledge of tools such as Typeform (surveys), Airtable (smart sheets and work management), Feedly (news), Buffer (social media), etc.;

  • Adobe packages (Illustrator, Photoshop);

  • STATA, SPSS, nVivo and other data management tools;

  • Personal projects or blogs;

  • Knowledge of a second language spoken in key countries. French, Portuguese, Swahili, Urdu, Farsi, Turkish, Spanish, Russian, Mandarin;

  • Due to the current research focus, professional knowledge of spoken and written Arabic is a super plus!!
