The African DeepTech Ecosystem

2023 marked a pivotal year for DeepTech globally, with milestones like the launch of ChatGPT, BioNTech’s acquisition of Instadeep, the approval of the first CRISPR-based treatment, and Nvidia entering the trillion-dollar club.

Funding to DeepTech startups soared, representing over 20% of all global startup funding - a trend strongly mirrored in Africa, where a third of the startup funding was allocated to DeepTech.Despite this surge, Africa’s DeepTech ecosystem remains under the radar due to limited data and a lack of unified terminology.

Our Deeptech in Africa report produced as a fruit of a collaboration with OST's Brain programme and Digital Africa seeks to contribute to minimising the data gap on Deeptech in Africa by introducing a framework and detailed insights into the innovation and funding dynamics, aiming to empower stakeholders to drive DeepTech forward across the continent.
